Meet the Makers of Roobee Roo

Roobee Roo kids boardbooks for Lunch Lady Magazine

Inspired by their own family adventures and creative projects, husband and wife team Nico and Candy Robertson, created Roobee Roo—a series of playful board books for young readers. We chat with co-founder Candy on how the cute character Roobee Roo came about.

What is Roobee Roo?

Roobee Roo is a series of books that parents and kids love. They're fun and funny board books that are as enjoyable to read as they are to listen to. No matter how many times you’re asked.

You see, Roobee Roo has a magical pouch that fills up with new things every day. You start each book by opening her pouch and trying to guess what she’s going to do that day. Then she does it. Often with a bunch of mates as cute as her!

As parents reading Roobee Roo, it doesn't take long to realise that the main character of these adorably illustrated books is a lot like your own child. She’s bright, bubbly, and super fun to be around. She’s also creative, inclusive, and eager to try absolutely everything. And then it hits you: this magical pouch of hers … it’s just a metaphor for the magic of childhood, right?

When was the idea for Roobee Roo first realised?

We came up with the idea back in 2018. At the time, we were separated by long distance and feeling nostalgic. Nico was away for many weeks at a time, renovating the house we had raised our daughter in. It was the home where she had experienced her first day of school, first beach swim, first sore knee, first everything. Needless to say, it was a tough and emotional time.

Before leaving, Nico would hide a note for me to find about a curious kangaroo who loved going on adventures. These were inspired by the many adventures we had with our daughter, galumphing all over the Mornington Peninsula.

Alone and scared at our new house in Ballarat, I would illustrate these notes and send pictures back to Nico. The comics helped us feel connected during this long and difficult time of separation. They also helped us process the fact that our daughter was growing up and starting a new chapter of her life.

Who is behind the idea and what is your creative background?

We’re a creative couple who met in high school art class, on Sydney’s northern beaches.

I am a graphic designer and artist and Nico is a designer and writer.

We’ve always worked very closely together, creating numerous brands and characters over the years. When we're not working on books, we like making toys and creating things out of wood.

What do you love most about Roobee Roo?

Her endless enthusiasm and zest for life. Roobee Roo is just so excited to discover what is in her pouch each and every day! We love seeing her interacting with her friends, and seeing the creative things she gets up to. She also wins the award for Best Dance Moves.

Why does Roobee Roo exist?

She exists to remind us to slow down and enjoy everything. Her magical pouch represents those wonderful years in early life when everything is new and amazing and waiting to be explored.

Who is Roobee Roo made for?

Anyone who loves fun books, cute characters, and beautiful design.

These are short, simple stories about everyday adventure that children can relate to and identify themselves in.

What have you learnt about yourselves from making Roobee Roo?

We’ve learnt that it’s important to be present in the moment. Childhood is fleeting. As a parent, you have the choice to be an active part of it and unlock something magical.

From a practical side, I have also learnt why toddlers are so incredibly cute. It’s all to do with proportions!
