all about Aussie Apples
Who are Aussie Apples?
Aussie Apples is managed by Hort Innovation on behalf of Australia’s growers. Hort Innovation is a grower-owned, not-for-profit research and development corporation for Australian Horticulture. Our ‘core’ purpose is to help improve the health and wellbeing of Australian consumers by inspiring them to get their crunch on with delicious and nutritious local Aussie apples.
How many apple varieties are grown in Australia?
Aussies are spoilt for choice when it comes to locally grown apples! Aussie Apples come in many delicious varieties which are grown in different parts of Australia and are available at different times of the year. Each apple has a unique flavour profile. The most popular varieties in Australia are Granny Smith, Pink Lady and Royal Gala. We also have the classics: Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Sundowner, as well as some newer varieties like Jazz, Bravo, Kanzi and Modi. There are also certain varieties that are grown to be used in cider.
What is something we might not know about apple farming?
Apples like it cold. The majority of apple growing happens in cooler climates of Australia and apple trees require a certain number of ‘chill hours’ (i.e. hours below 7ºC) to produce fruit. The best place to keep your apples after you buy them is in the fridge – they’ll stay fresher and keep their crunch for longer.
How many apples do Aussies eat every year?
The average Australian household purchases over 14 kilograms of apples each year!
What’s your favourite Apple recipe?
How do we choose! Apples are the ultimate healthy, crunchy, convenient snack on their own but also pair well with sweet and savoury dishes. One of our favourites at the moment is our Apple Vietnamese Salad. Combined with spring rolls, fresh herbs and vegetables, and a tangy dressing, apples provide the perfect crunch and sweetness to create a salad like no other. This, and other great recipes, can be found on the Aussie Apples website.
